Raiders during the Civil War

Confederate forces during the Civil War sometimes resorted to unconventional tactics. These includes sending raiders into Union territory to create havoc behind the lines, without attempting to hold any territory militarily. The best known of these was Morgan's Raiders, organized by John Hunt Morgan, which conducted a thousand-mile foray into the Midwest in 1863, and achieved the farthest north penetration by uniformed Confederate troops.
