Johnny Appleseed was a real person, John Chapman. Born in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1775, he was a pioneer nurseryman who was instrumental in introducing apple trees into Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He died in 1845, already a legend.
