Swedish Medical Center

Swedish Medical Center is the largest comprehensive non-profit health provider in the Pacific Northwest. Based in Seattle, Washington, the medical system strives to provide the highest quality, best-value healthcare to the community. Seattle Heart and Vascular Institute at the center serves as the largest, most-comprehensive source for advanced cardiac care in the state. Seattle Neuroscience Institute is a specialized center for neurological diseases and disorders. A wide range of other services, including orthopedics, pediatrics, primary care, and women’s health and childbirth are offered. A home-care services program is available for patients who need exceptional care and assistance. The medical center began its services in 1910 as Swedish Hospital, the brainchild of Dr. Nils Johanson, a surgeon and Swedish immigrant. In 1932, the hospital opened its first cancer care center, which has grown to be a large program for the Northwest. By 1975, the hospital had became a major medical center in the region. Doctors Hospital and Seattle General Hospital merged with the center in 1980. The Ballard Community Hospital, the Ballard Campus of the medical center, became a part of it in 1992. The Providence Seattle Medical Center, founded by the Sisters of Providence, joined the medical system to form the Providence campus in 2000. To serve the Eastside community, Swedish Medical Center recently opened an emergency room and specialty center in Issaquah. That campus is an outpatient facility with emergency and specialty care services, a Swedish Physicians primary-care clinic, the Swedish Radio Imaging Center, the Swedish Sleep Medicine Institute, and a clinical lab. In addition, the medical center operates a network of 12 primary-care clinics and multiple specialty clinics throughout the greater Seattle area. Swedish is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the Washington State Department of Health, and the Commission on Cancer. The facility is affiliated with numerous suburban hospitals and clinics.
