Marine Corps

The United States Marine Corps was formed during the American Revolution as a force designed to be landed from sea in order to fight on land, as well as fighting in ship-to-ship engagements. Disbanded along with the continental navy in 1783, the Marines were reconstituted in 1794 due to increased tension with France. They fought in the War of Tripoli and have been involved in virtually every major American military engagement in the past two centuries.
